Mihir Garh has been designed with as many natural materials as possible, while the land around the property
has been left to nature so that local indigenous flora can thrive and attract curious wildlife in the area. Additionally,
every drop of rain water is collected and filtered for use. The fort has an advanced sewage treatment system through
which grey and black drainage water has been re-cycled and put to effective use. Solar heating provides warm/hot water
to guests to minimise electricity.

One of the largest forts in India, the Mehrangarh fort and was named after the sun deity of the Rathore clan. The majestic structure boasts seven imposing gates, some of them named after famous victories that took place along the fort’s boundary. Half a millennium in age, the towering fort looms high above the city of Jodhpur, shrouded by impressive stone bulwarks.
Accompanied by the Mehrangarh fort museum curator, set off on a private tour that includes personal stories and anecdotes about the various exhibits and collections. The museum features many fascinating artefacts, including an array of weapons from every period, with maharajas’ swords bejewelled with jade, rubies and emeralds, paintings that exhibit the finest samples of Marwar-Jodhpur artistry and elaborate royal palanquins used by kings as a means of transport.

The Marwari is a rare breed of horse from the Marwar (Jodhpur) region of India. The Rathores, traditional rulers of the region, were the first to breed them in the 12th century. Used throughout history as a cavalry horse by the people of the Marwar, the Marwari has always been noted for its loyalty and bravery in battle. Mihir Garh has one of the finest stables of the Marwari horse in the country.
With Mihir Garh’s extensive tailor-made equestrian program, you can choose from a variety of rides across the vast wilderness. The ride offers a great cultural experience, which gives a unique insight into the rich culture and traditions of the region, as well as offering great game-viewing opportunities. Herds of the rare famous blackbuck antelope, the blue bull antelope and the petite chinkara are very common viewing on the rides.
The region is also very rich in bird life with over 200 different species to be sighted. All rides are tailor-made to suit your unique requirements, keeping riding ability and duration in mind.
Profound and passionate environmentalists, the Bishnois follow the teachings of a 15th century sage, Swami Jambeshwar Maharaj, where their fundamental belief is to protect each and every living being, as well as the natural world. Mihir Garh offers one-of-kind village safaris that take guests into the heart of these quaint villages, and into the homes of these warm and hospitable people.
Living on the fringe of the Thar Desert, the Bishnois open their homes so that guests can experience and understand their way of life. Meet the Raikas (shepherds) clad in their glorious costumes, as well as the Paliwals and Meghwals (the Brahmin farmers and weavers). Not only are these unique people responsible for the survival of the blackbuck and chinkara that roam the plains, but they also have a beautiful relationship with them. You also experience an integral welcome ritual at the house of a Bishnoi along with turban tying.
Rajasthani cuisine is characterised by its extensive and impeccable use of spices, as well as an incredible range of chutneys. Local cuisine boasts a never-ending platter with an abundance of dishes, from tangy drinks and spicy starters, to mouth-watering vegetable dishes and crunchy bread. Mihir Garh is no exception, with many claiming their best meal in India there!
Here, guests are treated to a delicious cooking demonstration, with recipes from the late Thakurani Sahbia Jayenda Kumari’s books on traditional Rajasthani food. Don your chef’s hat and experiment with your own favourite recipes from the book and learn tasty secrets and ideas passed down from generations, with culinary workshops. Alternatively, you can remain a spectator of the fine art of cooking and later enjoy the delectable dishes at a special dinner.
Taking you back to the days of the Maharajas, when shikar (hunting) was the sport of the day. Enjoy a night out in the wilderness under the moonlight and immerse yourself in the quiet of the desert, amongst the sounds of the blazing bonfire and the melodies of Rajasthani folk musicians, where Mihir Garh recreates this truly royal experience.
Make your way to the campsite on a camel cart eyeing the magnificent and tranquil desert landscape. Mashaal lit pathways welcome you as you step off and make your way to be seated on a traditional charpai, bolstered high on a lush cushion. Be entertained alongside the fire by the Manganiyar folk musicians and the terah-taal dancers as they delight you throughout the evening. A traditional dinner is served on a beautifully appointed candlelit dinner table, under the glorious night skies.
Reminiscent of a bygone era, dine in style with a delectable and traditional royal picnic. Relax under an ornate tent pitched exclusively for you next to a rippling lake. Guests are waited on by liveried butlers, while you make yourself comfortable on large mattresses with bolsters and soft cushions.
