Local legend tells of a god who had his heart set on marrying a woman named Naipí, but she was in love with a mortal man, Tarobá. The couple fled together in a canoe, but the god caught up with them and in his anger split the river, creating these waterfalls and condemning the lovers to an eternal watery descent. Translated from the native Mbyá-Guaraní for ‘big water’, Iguazu Falls consist of 275 separate waterfalls that pump 1.5 million litres (400,000 gallons) of water per second. Iguazu Falls is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit is during the mid-season (July to October or February to April). The weather is ideal during this time, and the parks on either side tend to be less crowded.
