Nestled amidst the lush greenery of Sri Lanka’s eastern province, Gal Oya Lodge is an eco-friendly haven offering an unforgettable escape into nature’s embrace. This unique lodge, spread across 20 acres (8 hectares) of private jungle, is a sanctuary for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers. Bordering the serene waters of Senanayake Samudraya, Sri Lanka’s largest inland lake, lush evergreen forests and open savannas teeming with diverse wildlife surround the lodge, creating a captivating atmosphere.
With a key focus on sustainable tourism, the lodge’s philosophy lies at the heart of its design: to bring guests as close to nature as possible while protecting its natural surrounds. The lodge’s nine bungalows and one family villa have been created in harmony with nature, blending seamlessly into its surrounding landscape and crafted from local materials. Each room features a king-sized bed, ensuite al fresco bathroom and a private living area with floor to ceiling windows taking full advantage of the spectacular views. A private garden verandah completes the secluded space in which guests are invited to relax and unwind.
The lodge’s inhouse restaurant serves delectable mix of Sri Lankan and Western cuisine, prepared using fresh, locally sourced ingredients from the lodge’s home-grown herb and vegetable garden as well as neighbouring village farmers. Savour authentic flavours while taking in breathtaking views of the lake and surrounding landscapes.
What we love about Gal Oya Lodge
- Explore the lodge’s natural surrounds on a guided walk with the chief from the neighboring Vedda community. The Vedda are one of the last remaining communities of the local, forest-dwelling people of central Sri Lanka who have inhabited the island for hundreds of years. Watch in awe as the forest comes alive as the chief explains his tribe’s use of medicinal plants, the location of their ancient hunting grounds and cave dwellings, as well as how hunter-gatherers sustained themselves in the ancient jungles of Gal Oya.
- Gal Oya Lodge provides a gateway to explore the hidden natural wonders of Gal Oya National Park. The only place in Sri Lanka guests can experience a boat safari on the Senanayake Samudraya Lake, embark on thrilling experience across the lake, in search of the elusive Asian elephant swimming between the islands. Or venture deeper into the jungle on a jeep 4×4 safari, keeping an eye out for leopard, sloth bears, and an abundance of birdlife.
- After an eventful morning exploring, while away the afternoon at the lodge’s guest swimming pool with a favourite drink in hand.
