Sigiriya is an ancient city featuring beautifully manicured gardens, complete with sparkling pools, ponds and cascading fountains, defensive moats and fortifications, and a monastery; with the highlight being the two-hundred metre high rock that protrudes from the relic. King Kashyapa I built his fortress on top of this massive rock, ensuring it would be indestructible, and no one could gain access to it. Archaeologists believe that the rock once sheltered Buddhist monks in the 3rd century BCE. The entrance to the castle is through the mouth of a lion, and is flanked with its enormous paws. Over time the head has since collapsed. Stunning frescos adorn the walls in the Cobra Hood Cave, and the view at the top of the fortress is utterly breath-taking, and well worth the challenging climb up.
