Zululand welcome group
Guests arriving at the small northern Kwa-Zulu Natal town of Mkuze will be welcomed by a group of local women adorned in ceremonial dress, accessorised with intricate beadwork typically reserved for Zulu weddings. Singing and dancing, they will sway their leather concertina skirts, creating a melodic rhythm with their traditional ankle shakers.
Interactive Drumming
Awaken your inner musician with this fun and interactive drumming session. Each guest is provided with a traditional wooden drum and is guided by an expert instructor to create a melodious drumbeat in unison. African hand drums are typically played to communicate, celebrate and inspire, forming part of the local people’s daily experiences.
Zulu Dancers
Dressed in full warrior attire, including shields and weapons, local Zulu dancers perform the traditional ‘indlamu’ war dance, which showcases the strength of the warriors and celebrates the battle victories of the impi (army). Each performance lasts approximately 10 to 15 minutes and is accompanied by a small group of drummers beating on homemade cowhide stretched drums.
Marimba band
The gentle tune and soft hollow sounds of the wooden Marimba provide fabulous African background music for any event. As guests enjoy an al fresco dining experience under the stars, they can listen to a variety of percussion tunes and rhythms skilfully created by the Marimba band as they expertly play the wooden keyboards with a mallet.
‘Local is Lekka’
Enjoy a South African-themed afternoon drinks stop in the heart of the African bush. Appreciate the beauty of the wild engaging with fellow safari enthusiasts whilst enjoying a taste of local liquor, including craft beers, artisanal gins and springbok shooters paired with a smorgasbord of South African-inspired cuisines, including bunny chow, biltong and koeksisters.
Maasai delight
Beautifully set-up on the lush lawn in front of the lodge guest area, witness the captivating performances of Maasai warriors as they sing and dance in unison. Beginning just as the sun begins to set, guests are mesmerised by the enthralling recitals complete with the beauty of the crater beyond. Coupled with a crackling fit pit, creates for a hauntingly enchanting experience not easily forgotten.
African Choir
The local African Choir, made up of members of the rural communities surrounding Kirkman’s Kamp, entertains with their melodious tunes and songs, performed without musical instruments or a formal choir conductor. Each performance lasts approximately 10 to 15 minutes and includes a variety of traditional African music, vibrant songs, and the South African national anthem. Ideally accompanied by sundowners in the bush.
Shangaan Village Tour
Visit a Shangani community and interact with the friendly people of Mpumalanga. A Bantu tribal group, the Shangani are the dominant group in the North East of South Africa. A local &Beyond guide will escort you though the community and share interesting insights ad narratives about Shangani culture and its fascinating customs, beliefs and traditions.
Woodstock street art tour
Join a local guide and become immersed in Woodstock’s vibrant graffiti culture. Discover how, in 2010, a single artist transformed the neighbourhood. By seeking permission from residents to turn blank walls into canvases, he flipped the script on graffiti’s outlaw image. This pioneering approach paved the way for a thriving artistic hub, attracting local and international talent.
