Imagine helping to build a living masterpiece that thrives beneath the ocean’s surface. On this interactive half-day experience, you’ll play a pivotal role in enriching the underwater world around Mnemba Island through the creation of your own unique coral frame and nurturing its growth.
After a short briefing at the Ocean Without Borders’ (OWB) Discovery Centre touching on the importance of coral frames and how they contribute to reef revival, you’ll have the incredible opportunity to personally attach coral fragments directly onto your very own frame. Once complete, the frames are carefully gathered and taken by boat to a designated area near the existing artificial reefs. It is here you’ll submerge your frame, diving beneath the surface to secure it in its selected spot as well as take photos to commemorate your contribution. Thereafter, once you have returned home, you’ll continue to receive quarterly updates on your coral frame’s progress.
For those who don’t scuba dive, you can still be a coral champion by simply sponsoring a coral frame. You’ll take part in the same out-of-water process, helping to attach the coral fragments delicately onto the coral frame before the frame is transported into the ocean. You’ll also receive the same regular updates on its progress, allowing you to celebrate its growth from afar.
It’s important to be aware of the challenges facing coral reefs. By participating in this experience, you’re not just helping to restore the reefs around the island; you’re gaining a deeper understanding of the threats these delicate ecosystems face and the ongoing efforts to protect them.
This experience must be booked in advance (can be booked once on the island) and is subject to the availability of the OWB and marine ranger teams. Please note that the ocean conditions play a vital role in the enjoyment of this experience, and it is therefore weather dependent.
*Guest participation in this experience includes a Wild Impact OWB programme donation.
**Please note an Open Water Diver certificate is required for guests who wish to dive to the underwater site where their frame will be secured. For guests who do not have a diver’s certificate, they can still participate in the land-based portion of this experience and snorkel along the ocean’s surface.
