Your journey begins in Kathmandu. Explore the ancient art, culture, and history of Nepal in the capital city and surrounds on a guided tour of Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Patan. Visit the revered Hindu temple, Pashupatinath Temple as well as one of the holiest Buddhist stupas outside of Tibet, Boudhanath Stupa.
From Kathmandu, helicopter to Lukla before lacing up your hiking boots to begin a trek like no other. Over the next five days enjoy breathtaking views of the mighty Himalaya, including Mt Everest and surrounds, as you hike from Lukla to Monjo, then onto Namche, Tashinga, and Pangbache.
Encounter houses of worship and venerable temples as well as an array of tiny villages and mountain towns. Cross over suspension bridges and flowing streams, pass through magical forests, and carefully climb mountainsides. A taste of what to expect
Day 1 | Kathmandu | Arrival
- Upon your arrival at Kathmandu Tribhuvan International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by a representative from &Beyond. From here, you will be transferred to your hotel, Dwarika’s Hotel.
- Kathmandu, officially Kathmandu Metropolitan City, is the capital and largest urban agglomerate of Nepal. The agglomerate consists of Kathmandu at its core along with its sister cities Patan, Kirtipur, Thimi, and Bhaktapur.
- Recognised as a heritage hotel showcasing centuries-old intricate carved wood and terracotta work, Dwarika’s Hotel is celebrated for its intimate luxury coupled with the unique spirit and warm hospitality of the Nepali people – it is the ideal base from which to explore the city.
- Along with your fellow travellers, it is here you will stay for the next two nights. This evening, spend time getting to know each other discussing the exciting mountain adventure that awaits.
Day 2 | Kathmandu
- After a hearty breakfast at the hotel, embark on a full-day tour of Kathmandu and surrounds.
- Beginning in Bhaktapur, otherwise referred to as the ‘City of Devotees’, ‘City of Culture’, ‘Living Heritage’, or ‘Nepal’s Cultural Gem’, Bhaktapur is one of three royal cities in the Kathmandu Valley. Filled with monuments mostly made from terracotta bricks with carved wooden columns as well as palaces and temples with elaborate carvings, gilded roofs, and open courtyards, Bhaktapur is dotted with pagodas and religious shrines. Lying along the ancient trade route between India and Tibet, Bhaktapur is partly surrounded by mountains, providing a magnificent view of the mighty Himalaya.
- After lunch, explore the Pashupatinath Temple and Boudhanath Stupa.
Pashupatinath Temple: One of the most significant Hindu temples of Lord Shiva, Pashupatinath Temple is located on the banks of the holy Bagmati River in the eastern part of Kathmandu. The temple serves as the seat of the national deity, Lord Pashupatinath (Lord Shiva) and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Boudhanath Stupa: Boudhanath Stupa (or Bodhnath Stupa) is the largest stupa in Nepal as well as one of the holiest Tibetan Buddhist shrines outside of Tibet. Dating back to the 6th century, the stupa sits at the centre of Tibetan culture in Kathmandu and is a revered symbol of Buddhism. The stupa is located on the eastern outskirts of Kathmandu.
Day 3 | Lukla | 2,856 m (9,370 ft)
- After an early-morning breakfast at the hotel, you will be transferred to Nepal’s domestic airport for a short (40-minute) chartered helicopter flight to Lukla, the gateway to the Khumbu region and your trailhead for the expedition ahead.
- Perhaps the most famous high-altitude airstrip in the world, Lukla was originally built by Sir Edmund Hillary’s Himalayan Trust as an emergency evacuation runway for casualties brought to the Trust’s hospital.
- Soaring over the rugged foothills, keep an eye out for the approaching snowline and impressive peaks beyond. Depending on the visibility, you might catch a glimpse of Mt Kanchenjunga, Mt Lhotse and Mt Makalu — the world’s third, fourth and fifth-highest mountains.
- Upon your arrival in Lukla, you will be transferred to your lodge, Everest Summit Lodge in Lukla where you will spend the evening.
- Spend the rest of the day at leisure, relaxing at the lodge or exploring Lukla and surrounds.
Day 4 | Trek to Monjo | 2,835 m (9,300 ft)
Trekking time: Approximately five hours
- After breakfast, meet your expert Sherpa crew and take your first steps along the iconic Everest Base Camp Trail that the Dalai Lama once called “the steps to heaven.”
- Today’s trek begins with a gentle climb up the mountainside along the left bank of the Dudh Kosi River. Following the path up and down, crossing over streams and passing through forests and tiny villages.
- After about five-hours you will reach the quaintly picturesque valley of Monjo. It is here you will spend the evening at the Everest Summit Lodge in Monjo.
Day 5 | Trek to Namche | 3,420 m (11,220 ft)
Trekking time: Approximately four hours
- After breakfast, set off over a wooden bridge to the right of the Dudh Kosi River.
- Leaving the villages of Chumao and Monjo behind, enter Sagarmatha National Park at Jorsale.
- Following a short walk along the riverbed, the river forks – to the right is the Dudh Kosi River and left Bhote Kosi River, which leads to the famous peak of Mt Nampa.
- After a short distance along the Bhote Kosi River, begin a steep ascent to Namche.
- Approximately halfway up the zigzagging trail, a gap in the trees rewards hikers with the first sight of Mt Everest sitting at 8,848.86 m (29,029 ft). If the weather is clear, the top of the southwest face is visible behind the long Lhotse-Nuptse ridge.
- The climb eases somewhat and the town of Namche appears ahead.
- Surrounded by an amphitheatre of peaks — Mt Thamserku (6,618 m / 21,711 ft), Mt Kwangde Ri (6,187 m / 20,297 ft) and Mt Khumbila (5,402 m / 17,724 ft), Namche is the largest and most prosperous town in the Khumbu region. It is here you will spend the night.
- The town is a central hub for the area and its renowned bazaar, held every Saturday, sells everything from livestock and vegetables to traditional crafts such as hand-woven aprons and Tibetan boots.
Day 6 | Trek to Tashinga | 3,598 m (11,800 ft)
Trekking time: Approximately three hours
- After breakfast, trek to Tashinga.
- After about three-hours, you will reach the Everest Summit Lodge in Tashinga set amidst a pine forest overlooking the Dudh Koshi Valley.
- The lodge rewards breathtaking views of Mt Ama Dablam (6,695 m / 21,965 ft).
Day 7 | Trek to Pangboche | 3,985 m (13,075 ft)
Trekking time: Approximately five to six hours
- This morning, looking across the valley, you can see the path sloping diagonally up towards the famous monastery of Tengboche, but first you must cross the river below. This will take approximately one-hour, descending steeply in a series of zigzags to the Dudh Kosi River.
- A little way further on is a small hamlet, Phunki Tanga – this is a great spot to stop for a short break and cup of tea.
- It will take approximately two to three hours to reach the monastery at an even hiking pace. At first, the trail will climb steeply up through a shaded pine forest before levelling out along a path that gently rises like a ramp to the monastery.
- Browse through the Visitors Centre before sitting down inside the temple for afternoon prayers. Conch shells are blown, the monks arrive, and visitors are expected to sit quietly on the right-hand side of the temple.
- Lunch will be served in one of the lodges in Tengboche.
- After exploring the area and enjoying the well rewarded views of Mt Everest, it is time to head to Pangboche. You will spend the next two nights in Pangboche.
Day 8 | Day trek to Ama Dablam Base Camp and back 4,575 m (15,000 ft)
Trekking time: Approximately six hours
- Today you will hike to Ama Dablam Base Camp.
- Ama Dablam Base Camp is located at an altitude of 4,575 m (15,000 ft) on an open yak pasture beneath the west face of the mountain.
- Crossing the suspension bridge over Imja River, follow a gradual ascent until reaching the small village of Lhabarma. You will find yourself standing right in front of Ama Dablam.
- From here you have an incredible view of Mt Ama Dablam (6,856 m / 22,491 ft), Mt Kantega (6,783 m / 22,251 ft), Mt Nuptse (7,879 m / 25,847 ft), Mt Lobuche (6,090 m / 19,978 ft), Mt Pumori (7,165 m / 23,504 ft), Mt Thamserku (6,623 m / 21,726 ft), Mt Cholatse (6,335 m / 20,781 ft), Mt Taboche (6,495 m / 21,306 ft), Mt Khumbi La (5,765 m / 18,912 ft), Mt Kwangde Ri (6,011 m / 19,719 ft), and the beautiful Mimbo glacier.
Day 9 | Pangboche to Kala Patthar and back to Kathmandu
- Explore more of the Everest region aboard a helicopter flight.
- An unforgettable experience, in addition to Mt Everest, the helicopter will soar near other major peaks, including Mt Lhotse, Mt Makalu and Mt Cho Oyu.
- Weather permitting, the helicopter will land at Kala Patthar for a short photo stop (approximately 10-minutes) before heading back to Kathmandu.
- On arrival in Kathmandu, you will be met by an &Beyond representative and transferred to your hotel.
- After lunch, embark on a sightseeing tour of Patan, including the Patan Museum.
- Patan Durbar Square is in the heart of the city and was once the palace of the kings of Patan. The square and its surrounds consist of artistic courtyards and graceful pagoda temples – a display of Newari architecture that had reached its pinnacle during the reign of the Malla kings. The Krishna Mandir (Temple), built entirely of stone, is said to be the first specimen of Shikhara-style architecture in Nepal.
- Patan Museum is the first public museum in Nepal that has been created as an autonomous institution. The museum consists of the ancient palace, temples, and shrines, noted for their exquisite carvings.
Day 10 | Kathmandu | Departure
- Your Himalaya adventure has come to an end – it is time to depart.
- After breakfast at the hotel, wave a fond farewell to Nepal as you are transferred to Kathmandu Tribhuvan International Airport to board your flight back home or onto your next travel destination.
