Step back in time and become immersed in the rich tapestry of Tibetan Buddhism. Gyantse boasts two remarkable landmarks: Pelkor Chöde Monastery and the Kumbum Stupa.
Pelkor Chöde: Meaning ‘auspicious monastery’ in Tibetan, Pelkor Chöde was built in the early 15th century. This unique structure reflects a period of religious coexistence in Tibet, housing chapels belonging to the Sakyapa, Kadampa, and Gelugpa traditions. Tsedang Hotel
Embark on a historical and cultural exploration of Tsedang’s sacred sites. Your expert guide will lead you on a fascinating tour of Samye Monastery and Yambulakhang.
Samye Monastery: Steeped in history, Samye holds the distinction of being Tibet’s first Buddhist monastery. Founded in the 770s under the reign of King Trisong Detsen, it was built with the guidance of Indian scholars Padmasambhava and Shantarakshita. The architectural design reflects Buddhist cosmology, mirroring the universe’s structure. The central temple represents the four continents surrounding Mount Sumeru, the mythical world centre. Flanking each side are smaller temples symbolizing the subcontinents.
Yambulakhang: Meaning ‘the palace on the leg of a female deer’, Yambulakhang is perched on the eastern bank of the Yarlung River. This small structure is believed to be the oldest building in Tibet. Local legends credit its construction to the first king of the Yarlung Dynasty, Nyatri Tsenpo. While the exact origins remain debated, scholars believe the current structure dates back to the 7th or 8th century and may have been built by either Songtsen Gampo or Trisong Detsen. Tibetan murals suggest further modifications during the 5th Dalai Lama’s reign.
This morning, bid a fond farewell to Tsedang and embark on a scenic 1.5-hour drive to Lhasa’s Gonggar Airport for your return flight to Kathmandu.
Upon arrival in Kathmandu, you’ll be met and transferred to the Dwarika’s Hotel for a relaxing overnight stay.
