More about Cabo Froward
In 2021, thanks to the support of Tompkins Conservation and a group of nine Chilean and international philanthropists, Rewilding Chile acquired 93,492 hectares (231,024 acres) at Cabo Froward. Collaborating with the government, the team is continuously working to ensure that this territory acquires the greatest possible protection, triggering additional protection on public lands. Cabo Froward boasts large areas of native forest, with the presence of Pilgerodendron uviferum (Guaitecas cypress), the southernmost conifer on the planet, and extensive peatlands, one of the most efficient ecosystems in carbon sequestration. It is also the last continental habitat of the huemul deer and is adjacent to the southernmost nesting site of the Ruddy-headed goose, which are both endangered species.
This place also stands out for its cultural value and history, marked by the presence of ancestral cultures such as the local Kawésqar people. The Cabo Froward project, initiated by external conservation groups, is a significant part of the global effort towards largescale conservation. This project aims to conserve at least 30% of land and ocean by the year 2030, setting a precedent for future conservation initiatives. Cabo Froward stands as a beacon of hope, striving to achieve the highest level of conservation possible both on land and at sea, ensuring the preservation of this unique ecosystem for generations to come.
