Fiesty feline in battle mode
A very shy female leopard was hiding in a bush waiting for the right moment to hunt the antelope that come down to the water to drink and cross the small canal of water to the other side. The leopard moved very slowly through the water, not to be seen by the antelope and so that they couldn’t smell her. We waited for more than an hour. All the other cars gave up and drove away. We were the only jeep that were waiting for the action to unfold. A few male impalas walked down into the water to drink and the leopard jumped out of nowhere onto a big male impala. She blocked its airway with her mouth to suffocate her. The impala tried to get up again and they were fighting for life. At the end, the impala lost his strength and the leopard pulled him up to a safe place to feed. The next morning we went to the same place to see what had happened during the night. The leopard had almost eaten the whole impala, except the stomach, to avoid the smell attracting other predators. In all these years of wildlife safaris, from our first safari with andBeyond in 2011, I had never seen a leopard kill. Only once at andBeyond Ngala (South Africa) we saw a leopard killing a chameleon. This time my son and I got an amazing, memorable sighting. We were so blessed!
