Set in the Buddhist village of Jaubari at approximately 2,850 m (9,350 ft) above sea level, Red Panda Outpost serves as a field base for exploring the temperate forests of eastern Nepal near the Singalila ridgeline. Originally a local teahouse, the property has evolved into a small, conservation-led lodge designed to support red panda protection while creating tangible economic benefit for the surrounding community.
The Outpost operates on a community-based tourism model. Single-use plastics are minimised, packaged foods reduced, and operational impact kept intentionally low.
Offering six simple, well-kept guest rooms with attached bathrooms, hot water and reliable electricity — relish practical comforts in a remote setting. A central dining and gathering space, warmed by a traditional bukhari stove, becomes the heart of the lodge after long days in the forest. Meals draw on regional flavours and seasonal ingredients, often reflecting the culinary traditions of the eastern Himalayas.
From the doorstep, forest trails lead into mixed broadleaf and bamboo habitats – prime red panda terrain. Days are shaped by tracking signs, weather conditions and local knowledge. Walks are guided by trained community members who understand the subtleties of the landscape, from feeding trees to nesting patterns. The experience is deliberate and field-oriented, with time spent scanning canopy lines, listening for bird calls and reading the forest floor.
At the Red Panda Outpost, be immersed in the forest and among the people who call these hills home.
