Early Inspiration
Born and raised in Mumbai, Pranad Patil’s fascination with India’s wild spaces began with birdwatching and photography. This curiosity soon grew into a lifelong vocation: interpreting nature for others, researching its hidden layers, and helping guests connect deeply with the wilderness.
Career as a Naturalist
Over more than 15 years, Pranad has worked as Resident or Head Naturalist at some of India’s most celebrated wilderness destinations:
- The Oberoi Vanyavilas, Ranthambhore (2010–2013) – Twice recognised with Star of the Month awards for guest appreciation; created a bespoke bird guide for lodge guests.
- Orange County, Kabini (2013–2014) – Senior Executive Naturalist, interpreting the rich riverine ecosystem.
- The Bamboo Forest Safari Lodge, Tadoba (2015–2017) – Guided safaris and oversaw hotel operations across multiple departments.
- Singinawa Jungle Lodge, Kanha (2017–2021) – Head Naturalist, researcher, and trainer for forest department programmes.
- Bagh Villas, Kanha (2021–2022) – Resident Naturalist.
- SUJÁN Jawai, Rajasthan (2022–2023) – Head of Field, leading a team of 20 rangers in one of India’s most distinctive leopard landscapes.
- Jamtara Wilderness Camp, Pench (2023–present) – Senior Naturalist, continuing his leadership in field interpretation.
Conservation and Research
Pranad’s contribution extends beyond guiding:
- Recorded the first Lesser Bluewing dragonfly in Rajasthan, and the first Tickell’s Thrush in Ranthambhore.
- Authored and co-authored publications in respected journals, including a taxonomic revision of the Sacred Grove Bush Frog.
- Documented the Common Onyx butterfly in Central India for the first time.
- Published Butterflies of Kanha Landscape and numerous articles in Sanctuary Asia, Hornbill, Saevus, and more.
Guiding and Training
- Designed and conducted guide training for Forest Departments in Kanha, Pench, and Satpura Tiger Reserves.
- Coordinated workshops for women guides in Central India in 2023.
- Represented Singinawa at Birdfair, Rutland Water, UK (2017).
- Served as a resource person for multiple outreach programmes introducing local schoolchildren to wildlife.
Recognition and Guest Engagement
- Honoured with three ‘Star of the Month’ awards at The Oberoi Vanyavilas.
- Featured in Sanctuary Cub magazine (cover story, March 2025).
- Frequently praised by guests for his ability to balance scientific knowledge with warmth, humour, and memorable storytelling.
Writing and Photography
Pranad is also an accomplished nature writer and photographer:
- Contributed articles and images to Sanctuary Asia, Saevus, Hornbill, and other publications.
- Regular contributor to lodge blogs and conservation platforms.
- His photography reflects the same ethos as his guiding—observant, patient, and deeply respectful of the natural world.
