East Africa
Joseph was born and raised in the Kigoma region of western Tanzania, an area known for two national gems, Gombe National Park and Mahale Mountain National Park, the home of chimpanzees.
Having received his education in this nature-rich district and with high school subjects including physics, chemistry and biology under his belt, it is no surprise that Joseph gravitated to a career in guiding. After school, he completed a certificate in tour guiding and wildlife management before training in Tarangire National Park for three months and then bagged his first job with a safari company.
No one in his family had ever pursued guiding as a career before so he had to gain all the necessary experience and know-how for himself. He recounts fondly how supportive his mother was of his unique dreams and it continues to spur him on.
Keeping his eye out for opportunities to work for an organisation that valued both tourism and wildlife conservation, Joseph was delighted by his chance meeting with &BEYOND’s Regional Ranger Trainer for East Africa. His enthusiasm and warm nature earned him an invitation to undertake the Mwewe ranger training and after a few intense weeks, he graduated, fully-qualified and was inducted as a full-blown &BEYONDer.
He is currently guiding at &BEYOND Grumeti Serengeti River Lodge.
Since I was a young boy, I have loved both wild and domestic animals
