No matter when you choose to acknowledge the milestone, each month of the year is filled with joyous moments perfect for any event. From spotting the Big Five and conquering active volcanoes to festivals filled with colour and culture, we’ve curated a delightful array of experiences to treasure every achievement.
For the first few weeks of each year, the southern Serengeti is alive with young wildebeest as thousands of calves are born each day. Not far behind are an overwhelming number of predators optimistically prowling the lush plains watching and waiting as the newborns take their first steps. This dynamic, and at times heartbreaking, interplay of predator-prey is one of the Great Migration’s most memorable showstoppers.
Two of Punakha’s most popular festivals, the Punakha Drubchen and Punakha Tshechu take place each year in February, set in the beautiful courtyard of the Punakha Dzong just as the jacarandas begin to bloom. During this period the fortress comes alive with colourful costumes, historic performances and lively folk dances as Bhutanese people from across the valley come together to celebrate their faith and heritage.
A serene and thrilling haven devoid of crowds, &Beyond Vira Vira is the perfect getaway in March for any celebration. Immersed on an expansive, forested estate with breathtaking views of the surrounding snow-capped peaks, the lodge is themed in beauty. The dry, warm weather is ideal for ascending the awe-inspiring Villarrica Volcano or embarking on a range for water activities, such as rafting, stand-up paddle boarding and kayaking.
If viewing leopard on safari is on your bucket list, the Sabi Sand Nature Reserve is certainly one of the top destinations in Africa to do so. In fact, its arguably one of the best places to see the Big Five up close. April’s cooler temperatures along with the once thick vegetation beginning to thin makes animals easier to spot, ensuring a truly memorable safari experience. Can you think of a better way to celebrate your milestone?
Although the Bazaruto Archipelago is beautiful year-round with its tropical climate, the weather hits its peak during the dry season from May to November. Take a breathtakingly scenic helicopter flip from the Mozambican coastline to the luxurious island of Benguerra. Clear blue skies coupled with a gentle sea breeze make for magnificent beach days spent relaxing on the soft white sand or riding horses bareback into the ocean.
Phinda Private Game Reserve is ideally situated in close proximity to the unspoiled beaches of the Indian Ocean, offering an unmatched combination of bush and beach adventures. This time of year you can enjoy incredible Big Five sightings in the sparse vegetation on the reserve as well as witness large pods of humpback whales migrate to the warmer waters of the Indian Ocean for their annual mating and calving season.
There’s something profoundly magical about the sunsets in the Okavango Delta. Whether seen from the water’s edge while gently floating in a traditional mokoro or with your favourite sundowner in hand while out on safari, witnessing the golden glow of the setting sun dip below the Delta horizon, transforming the evening sky into a canvas of vibrant hues streaked with orange, pink and purple, is a view not easily forgotten.
Cool and dry, with cloudless skies, Namibia in August is a wintery wonderland. Days are mild and sunny, ideal for summiting the towering ‘Big Daddy’ – the tallest sand dune in the Sossusvlei area. It’s also the perfect time to witness colourful wildflowers blossoming in what seems like an impossibly desolate and arid region. And with the evening skies generally clear, stargazing is also excellent this time of year.
By September, the wildebeest are congregating in the northern Serengeti, with the mighty Mara River in sight. Flowing through the northern Serengeti from the Masai Mara, this river presents a formidable task. Witnessing the dramatic showing as the vast herds face the gushing river water, filled with hungry crocodile, from the vantage point of a hot air balloon is one of the best ways to truly grasp the magnitude of this natural phenomenon.
Now is an idyllic time on Zanzibar Island. Not too hot and not too rainy with fewer crowds, allowing for a more relaxed celebratory retreat with a mild temperament. October still forms part of the ‘dry season’ (from June to October), which means cool winds, calm seas and clear skies. The warmer ocean is also ideal for swimming, offering some of the best snorkelling and scuba diving opportunities with excellent visibility.
Every year, between November and January, enormous leatherback and loggerhead turtles emerge from the Indian Ocean to lay their precious eggs at Sodwana Bay in South Africa. An awe-inspiring, humbling experience, a milestone occasion in its own right, set out on a thrilling nighttime adventure in search of these gentle giants as they ride the waves to shore to dig their nests at one of Africa’s last key nesting sites.
Why not spend the evening toasting to your milestone under a blanket of a million stars on an unforgettable sleepout adventure in the Lake Manyara National Park? A truly once-in-a-lifetime experience, this is one celebration you will never forget. What’s more, Lake Manyara is also well-known for its tree-climbing lion – just one of nature’s greatest marvels you may be lucky to experience on your journey.
