Situated 50 km from &Beyond Grumeti Serengeti River Lodge, along the eastern shore of Lake Victoria, is the Lukungu community. With a population of approximately 4 000 people, daily activities, which largely contribute to the community’s livelihood, include fishing and farming (mainly cotton, maize (a staple food-source), and livestock).
Since 2003, &Beyond’s long-standing community and conversation development partner, Africa Foundation, has been actively involved in the lives of those living in this small but vibrant village, through a number of community-led projects focused on crucial socio-economic development.
Start the day with a morning safari game drive (45 minutes to one hour) to the Serengeti National Park gate. From here it is just a short five-minute drive to the community. Led by your expert lodge guide, you will not only be gifted with an opportunity to interact with the friendly community residents and gain insight into their everyday lives, but will also leave with a deep understanding of these inspirational projects.
At the heart of community is the Lukungu Primary School, which includes the Lukungu Pre-School and Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) Centre, and the adjacent Anton Mtaka Secondary School. Providing essential support for children in the area affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic or with special needs, as well as the right to an education; these schools are key community development initiatives.
On this community visit, experience these foundational projects first-hand, and learn how to get involved and be part of this powerful legacy.
A visit to the village may also include a stop at the Mwamalole Pre-School, a sub-village of Lukungu.
