Day 1: Lima
Upon arrival at Lima Airport, after clearing customs, an &Beyond representative will be waiting to transfer you to your hotel, Miraflores Park.
Day 2: Lima
Today, after breakfast, immerse yourself in a full-day exploration of Lima’s rich culinary traditions and historic charm. This exciting tour offers a perfect blend of cultural insights and delicious experiences.
Your adventure begins with a visit to a bustling market. Here, you’ll discover the most commonly used Peruvian ingredients, essential for the city’s renowned gastronomy. Get ready to tantalise your taste buds with samples of these local products.
Next, head to Lima’s historic centre, followed by a fascinating exploration of Lima’s Chinatown. Become captivated by the city’s unique fusion of Peruvian and Chinese cultures, evident in both the atmosphere and cuisine. After a brief stroll through the heart of historic Lima, you’ll have the privilege of meeting an award-winning chef for lunch. This culinary master will guide you through the art of preparing the iconic Peruvian dish, ceviche. Following lunch, you’ll embark on a journey through Barranco, Lima’s bohemian district. This charming area boasts captivating architecture, delightful streets, and a vibrant collection of art galleries and stores.
Your day ends with a visit to a local restaurant for dinner. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to savour the traditional Peruvian dessert, picarones, a delightful treat made with squash and sweet potatoes.
Day 3: Amazon
After breakfast at the hotel, you will be privately transferred by an &Beyond representative to Lima Airport for your flight to Iquitos. Upon arrival at Iquitos International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by another &Beyond representative.
Board your private transfer and embark on a panoramic city tour of Iquitos, enjoying a delicious lunch along the way. The tour concludes at Nauta port, where you’ll board your vessel, Aria Amazon.
Settle into your spacious suite and prepare for an unforgettable journey. After introductions with your expert naturalist guides and a safety briefing, gather in the restaurant for the first of many delectable Amazonian meals, created by Aria Amazon’s renowned consulting chef, Pedro Miguel Schiaffino.
Day 4: Amazon
Your first day unfolds with an exciting wildlife adventure along the Ucayali River. Keep your eyes peeled for a dazzling array of parrots, egrets, hawks, and monkeys flitting through the lush rainforest canopy.
After breakfast, the choice is yours:
- Embrace the tranquillity of the black water Clavero Lake with a leisurely canoe, kayak, or swim.
OR
- Immerse yourself in the local way of life by visiting a traditional Amazonian village. Interact with the Riberenos, the people of the river, and gain a deeper understanding of their unique culture.
As dusk descends, head out on a captivating exploration of the Yarapa River. This nocturnal adventure promises encounters with exotic wildlife that awakens under the cloak of darkness.
Day 5: Amazon
Awaken to the symphony of the Amazon and enjoy a thrilling wildlife excursion along the mighty river.
After breakfast, delve deeper into the rainforest’s secrets with a journey on the Tahuayo River, a black water tributary. Your expert naturalist guides will share captivating stories of the Amazon, bringing its wonders to life.
Following lunch, prepare to be awestruck by the sheer diversity of the rainforest. Your guides will lead you on a captivating jungle walk through either San Pedro or Puerto Prado’s Forest. Here, you’ll gain a deeper appreciation for the Amazon’s incredible flora and fauna.
Day 6: Sacred Valley
Your morning begins with a fascinating guided visit to the local market. Immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere as you marvel at the regional produce unique to the Peruvian Amazon. After breakfast back at Aria Amazon, it’s time to disembark.
En route to the airport, a special stop awaits: the Manatee Rescue Center. Here, you’ll witness firsthand the dedicated efforts to rehabilitate orphaned Amazonian manatees before their heartwarming release back into the wild. Your journey continues with a transfer to Iquitos Airport for your flight to Cusco, with a connection in Lima. Upon arrival in Cusco, your guide will be waiting to transfer you on a scenic 1.5-hour private drive to the Sacred Valley of the Incas.
This lower elevation offers the perfect environment for relaxation and acclimatisation. Take a moment to breathe in the fresh mountain air and soak up the beauty of your surroundings. Time permitting, you may have the opportunity to explore the charming village of Pisac. Immerse yourself in the kaleidoscope of colours at the renowned market, a haven for travellers seeking unique souvenirs. Test your bartering skills as you browse local sweaters, ponchos, wall hangings, jewellery, handicrafts, and more.
Your day concludes with a comfortable transfer to your hotel, Sol y Luna for check-in. The rest of the afternoon is yours to relax at your leisure, allowing your body to adjust gently to the higher altitude.
Day 7: Sacred Valley
Today you will explore Chinchero, a small Andean village perched atop the windswept plains of Anta. Traditional mud-brick houses line the streets, and locals in colourful attire weave their way through the charming town square. The majestic Sacred Valley of the Incas unfolds before you, dominated by the snow-capped peak of Salkantay and the Cordillera Vilcabamba Mountain range. Don’t miss exploring Chinchero’s vibrant market, a treasure trove of local handicrafts and textiles.
Your adventure continues at Moray, an ancient agricultural marvel. Here, a network of circular terraces, some reaching depths of 100 m (330 ft), dominates the landscape. Retaining walls and a sophisticated irrigation system supported this ingenious ‘crop lab’.
Next, journey to Maras, where a mesmerising landscape of salt pools awaits. This traditional salt mine, still in operation today, boasts thousands of individual pools, each yielding a significant amount of salt monthly.
Day 8: Machu Picchu
This morning, meet your guide in your hotel lobby for your transfer to Ollantaytambo Train Station. Before your train journey to Machu Picchu, immerse yourself in the charm of Ollantaytambo. Explore its cobbled Inca streets lined with traditional square homes and browse local markets brimming with unique finds.
Board the Vistadome Train for a scenic journey to Machu Picchu. Imagine feeling part of the landscape as you gaze out the panoramic windows of this unique train. Upon arrival at the Machu Picchu Train Station, hotel representatives will greet you and help you with your luggage. Your guide will then accompany you on a short walk to the buses that ascend to the citadel.
Join your expert guide for a captivating 3-hour exploration where they will unveil the archaeological and historical significance of key areas, including Intihuatana (the Sun Dial), the Sacred Plaza, and the Temple of the Sun. Immerse yourself in the energy and atmosphere of this extraordinary site, a jewel nestled amidst the cloud forest, overlooked by Wayna Picchu, and framed by Inti Punku (Sun Gate), the entrance to the Inca Trail.
Day 9: Cusco
Embrace the magic of an early morning sunrise at Machu Picchu, an experience revered by many as the pinnacle of a visit here. Today, conquer new heights with your choice of two epic hikes:
- Huayna Picchu: This iconic mountain offers breathtaking panoramas of the citadel and surrounding landscape. The challenging climb is well worth the reward, leaving you with lasting memories.
- Machu Picchu Mountain: Granite steps wind their way to the summit of this majestic peak. For the adventurous soul, the demanding ascent is rewarded with unparalleled 360-degree views.
Following your chosen hike, rejoin your guide for a captivating exploration of Machu Picchu’s remaining secrets. Afterwards, descent by bus to Aguas Calientes awaits. Here, board the luxurious Hiram Bingham Train for a sophisticated journey back to the Sacred Valley Train Station.
Day 10: Cusco
Your day begins with a vibrant immersion at the San Pedro market, a treasure trove of culinary history and unique ingredients. Learn about the distinct role these elements play in Peruvian cuisine and discover the fascinating stories behind them. Under the expert guidance of some of the region’s best chefs, you’ll master the art of preparing exotic, delicious, and healthy dishes. This afternoon, enjoy a fascinating, guided city tour of Cusco, the once-grand capital of the Inca Empire and the ‘Archaeological Capital of America’. Witness the captivating blend of three distinct cultures: the indigenous Quechua people, the Spanish conquistadors, and the vibrant present-day population. Your exploration encompasses the heart of the city, including the majestic Main Square, the awe-inspiring Cusco Cathedral, and the breathtaking church of La Compañía. Day 11: Lake Titicaca
This morning a private transfer will take you to Wanchaq Station, where you’ll board the legendary Belmond Andean Explorer – the first luxury train in South America. Embark on a captivating two-night journey, exploring the natural wonders and ancient kingdoms that unfold along the route.
As you depart Cusco, a delicious lunch awaits onboard. In the afternoon, look forward to breathing views as the train reaches La Raya Pass, the highest point on the Cusco-Puno route (4,338 m / 14,232 ft above sea level). This majestic location marks the border between Cusco and Puno, offering magnificent panoramas of the snow-capped Bomboya peak, part of the mighty Andes Mountain range.
The Belmond Andean Explorer continues its journey, traversing one of the world’s highest train routes. Along the way, marvel at the captivating landscapes and charming towns nestled amidst the Andes. As the sun begins to set, indulge in pre-dinner cocktails before enjoying a delectable dinner onboard. Your adventure culminates at the Titicaca Lake Station in Puno, where you’ll spend the night comfortably settled at the lakeside station.
Day 12: Lake Titicaca
Witness the magic of sunrise over the vast expanse of Lake Titicaca. As the first rays of light paint the sky, breathe in the fresh morning air, and soak up the serenity of this iconic destination.
After a delicious breakfast onboard, disembark and embark on an interesting boat journey to the Uros Islands. Here, a unique community thrives, utilising the abundant totora reeds to craft their homes, furniture, boats, and even the very islands they call home. Immerse yourself in their culture and learn about their way of life.
Your adventure continues with a return to Puno for a satisfying lunch. Then, it’s time to board the train once more for your journey to Arequipa. As the sun begins to set, enjoy pre-dinner cocktails before indulging in another delectable onboard meal.
Weather permitting, a magical experience awaits at Saracocha: stargazing. Gaze upon a dazzling tapestry of stars and constellations, a breathtaking display visible from the train’s observation deck.
Day 13: Colca Canyon
Fuel up for your adventures with a delicious breakfast. Then, prepare to be charmed by the beauty of Lagunillas (Saracocha). This pristine blue lake reflects the majestic Andes, offering a haven for a variety of birdlife. Keep your eyes peeled for soaring Andean birds as you admire the remarkable scenery.
Next, delve into the past at the Sumbay Caves. Recognised as a Cultural Heritage of the Nation since 2000, these caves offer a glimpse into the lives of Paleolithic people. Explore the ancient rock art, estimated to be between 6,000 and 8,000 years old.
Your train journey continues towards Colca Train Station. As you travel through the Salinas and Aguada Blanca Reserve, prepare to be awestruck by the dramatic landscapes. This natural protected area boasts an impressive tapestry of volcanoes, rivers, salt flats, and unique rock formations.
Disembark at Colca Train Station and a private transfer awaits to take you to your hotel.
Day 14: Arequipa
This morning, embark on an exploration of Arequipa, also known as the ‘White City’ (Ciudad Blanca). This nickname stems from the city’s stunning colonial-era buildings, constructed from sillar, a distinctive white volcanic rock. Admire these architectural gems and delve deeper into Arequipa’s rich history.
Your tour encompasses the city’s top historical attractions, including a stroll through the charming colonial districts of San Lázaro and Yanahuara. Marvel at the intricate beauty of the Monastery of Santa Catalina and the grandeur of the Basilica Cathedral of Arequipa. To captivate your senses with panoramic vistas, you’ll also visit Carmen Alto and the Mirador de Yanahuara, offering stunning views of the city sprawling below.
In the afternoon, a private transfer will take you to Arequipa Airport for your flight to Lima. Upon arrival in Lima, friendly assistance awaits to ensure a smooth connection to your international flight onward. It is officially time to bid a fond farewell.
