John spent most of his formative years at sea and always knew that he wanted a career that revolved around the ocean.
After finishing high school, he embarked on a degree in Ichthyology and Fisheries Science but his initial objective was to get into aquaculture. He lost sight of that the more he learnt about applied research.
“During the course of my undergraduate, I was captured by the scientific process and the allure of understanding the workings of the world around us. The ability to answer questions about fish behaviour through rigorous scientific assessments was thrilling.”
John is now a fully-fledged fisheries biologist, conducting research on fish and fisheries, with the aim to ensure the sustainable use of marine ecosystems. His current focus is on fish behaviour, which he does through the use of electronic tagging.
