Discover the significance behind the revered Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, the sacred Bodhi tree that was planted in 288 BC. Legend reveals that this ancient tree grew from a branch taken from the holy Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, India, under which Buddha became enlightened. For seven days the Buddha did not move from this special place and was absorbed in his attainment of wisdom. Today, Animisalocana cetiya is a shrine that has been built on this divine spot, paying homage to the Buddha. This revered tree (taken from the branch) is in a huge open-air temple and crowds of pilgrims visit the temple daily to worship and meditate under its protection. Appreciate the gentle congregation of Buddhist monks surrounding the tree of enlightenment as they chant harmonious prayers and recite mantras. A haven of refuge, the heart-shaped leaves, roots and fruits of the tree are said to cure illness and ailments.
