Meet The Team
Growing up on a horse, cattle and sheep farm in the Great Karoo, Daryl was always fated to become a naturalist. From a young age, he would spend entire days walking in the bush, fascinated by animal tracks, skulls, feathers and dung. After high school, Daryl embarked on a BComm, but when he found himself concentrating more on his bird book than accounting, he realised it was time to get back to the bush.
He joined &Beyond Phinda Private Game Reserve in 2002. As part of the mentorship programme, he had advised and trained rangers, while also earning his Grade 2 Walking qualification, allowing him to track dangerous game, including buffalo, black and white rhino and elephant on foot. He quickly climbed the ranks from Assistant Head Ranger to Head Ranger, became a Grade 2 Walking Assessor, was later promoted to Specialist Guide and is now a fully-qualified Private Guide.
For Grant, one very distinct early childhood memory stands out. As a young boy on a family canoeing expedition, he sat quietly one winter morning on a sandbank overlooking the Zambezi Valley. As the sun rose, he watched hippo returning to the Zambezi River from their nightly forage. He remembers being completely awestruck and knew from then on that he would pursue an adventurous life in the bush.
This endless quest for adventure has taken Grant to the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro, the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda in search of mountain gorillas, and of course, to the rare sand forest of &Beyond Phinda Private Game Reserve where he was a guide and mentor for six years. He then took on the role of Regional Ranger Trainer for East Africa and is now based in the Serengeti/Mara, heading up &Beyond’s Mwewe Ranger Training School. Grant has extensive experience guiding guests on private safaris and believes the best way to experience the bush is on foot. He is a qualified trails guide and Grade 2 walker.
Recognising that some guests may have special interests that range beyond the usual twice-daily game drives, we offer adventures that are tailored around a guest’s specific interest such as a photographic safari, tracking safari, birding expedition, turtle excursion or even a family-orientated safari. These safaris can be incorporated into a greater itinerary and may be region specific. They will be guided by an expert &Beyond Specialist Guide and feature the exclusive use of an open 4x4 safari vehicle (where needed). These tailored adventures ensure an incomparable interpretive safari experience.
Meet The Team
Andrew’s love affair with photography began at an early age, when he came across an unopened roll of film lying in the midst of a dusty bush road at a game reserve where he was guiding. Now, with many years of guiding and photography experience under his belt, having lived in both the Sabi Sand Game Reserve and &Beyond Klein’s Camp in the Serengeti, the highlight of his career has included seeing his images in print all over South Africa. Andrew thrives on sharing his love and passion for photographing Africa’s wild places with his guests, helping them capture indelible memories of their adventures.
Ian Lombard has always had a passion for Africa’s wild landscapes and its fascinating creatures. Having completed &Beyond’s rigorous Inkwazi Ranger Training programme in 2010, he went on to work as a guide in the diverse Madikwe and Kwandwe Private Game Reserves (then in the &Beyond portfolio).
Keen to expand his horizons and explore new territory, Ian then joined the team at &Beyond Phinda Private Game Reserve. He worked his way up from Assistant Head Ranger to Head Ranger at Phinda Mountain Lodge and has now qualified as a Specialist Guide. He also plays a key role in the mentoring of fellow &Beyond guides.
Ian relishes the opportunity to explore the immense diversity of Zululand’s various habitats, which have sparked a wide range of interests from nesting turtles to endemic birds.
Ian was proudly named the Africa Direct/FGASA Safari Guide of the Year in 2015, having won the photography, game drive and storytelling categories. This is a fantastic and well-deserved accolade that highlights Ian’s extraordinary knowledge and true passion for nature.
