It’s all about the lions!
The Lionscape Coalition has been launched in partnership with the Lion Recovery Fund, &Beyond, and three other leading ecotourism operators, namely the Conservation Travel Foundation (established by Ultimate Safaris Namibia), Singita and Wilderness Safaris.
In this collaboration of competitors, all commercial considerations have been set aside for this greater cause.
Africa’s lion population has halved in the past 25 years
According to the latest IUCN assessment, Africa’s current lion status stands as ‘Vulnerable’ to ‘Critically Endangered’. The implications of this are extremely serious. As apex predators, lions are regarded by scientists as an “umbrella” species; if a lion population is thriving, it means the entire ecosystem around it is functioning effectively.
Let’s show you how it’s all coming together:
Why we are on board
It ticks ALL our impact boxes
This is an initiative that speaks powerfully to each element of our &Beyond care trilogy:
- It relates to our Care of the Wildlife, as it is dedicated to the preservation of an iconic and keynote wildlife species
- The restoration and preservation of the lion’s vital landscapes talks to our Care of the Land commitment
- In its strong community focus, this project mirrors our intrinsic Care of the People ethos
Failure is simply not an option
Africa’s ecotourism is intrinsically linked to the health of its iconic wildlife populations and their captivating landscapes. As an undisputed favourite for safari guests, losing lions will not only have dire ecological consequences, but will jeopardise the tourism industry itself, the jobs it creates and the many national economies to which it makes such an important contribution.
