Conservation & Community
&Beyond strives to create meaningful and lasting benefits for the natural environments and communities that surround our operations.
&Beyond's deeply entrenched social and conservation principles, as well as our model of responsible luxury experiential tourism, is valid wherever we operate. Wildlife conservation and ecotourism are vital for the future and the prosperity of Africa and India’s people. Our operations have benefited from our vast experience around the issues of sustainability and nature conservation.
Extensive training has produced guides and naturalists who can provide guests with a deep understanding of the reserves they are visiting and the issues that those natural sanctuaries face. At &Beyond we believe that we can help to protect threatened ecosystems, endangered species and the precious diversity of wildlife areas through our model of low impact, high yield responsible luxury experiential tourism.
Our Community Development Partner
&Beyond’s community development partner, Africa Foundation, is an independent tax-exempt non-profit organisation registered in South Africa, the United States and the United Kingdom. Working together with &Beyond and in consultation with the communities themselves, Africa Foundation facilitates the socio-economic development of rural communities living in or close to the continent’s conservation areas. For &Beyond, our involvement with Africa Foundation represents our core tenet of Care of the People.
What Sustainability Means to &Beyond
The values and ethics of &Beyond are, and always have been "Care of the Land. Care of the Wildlife. Care of the People." By creating a world-class travel business built on these ethics we maximise our ability to drive meaningful benefits into these areas and increase, or even extend, the stability of the earth’s wild spaces.
It's an intuitive part of how we operate and it’s increasingly becoming part of the reason our guests find their experiences with &Beyond more rewarding.
We believe all businesses can take less and give more, and we seek to do this through our actions, big and small, each day. Whether it is pioneering the reintroduction of endangered species, such as black rhino or cheetah breeding, preserving threatened sand forests or simply managing the vegetable peelings from our kitchens, we all consciously seek ways to leave a positive legacy for the earth.
Even though we have a relatively small physical footprint, in terms of buildings and number of guests, we can have a disproportionately large positive impact on the wildlife and people that are interwoven with &Beyond. Our entire group of lodges comprises less than 450 bedrooms (smaller than a mid-size city hotel), yet we help sustain more than 9 million hectares of the world’s most precious wildlife land.
We are "doing well by doing good" and it all starts with delighting each guest, and by creating a place where people travel with heart and feel nourished by what their holiday has meant to them and the world they've visited.
Precious Natural Resources
We believe that the wild spaces of Africa are a precious resource and that the only way to sustain them is through realising their true value. By placing an economic value on conservation and ensuring that the local communities benefit from our activities, &Beyond can guarantee that these wild areas have a future. However, we can only do this by engaging with those communities and through maintaining the value of Africa's wildlife regions by ensuring exceptional guest experiences.
Helping Realise Our Vision
Our guests play a crucial part in helping us realise our vision. By travelling with us, our guests enable us to make many small but meaningful differences to the world that surrounds us. Whether it is coming face to face with a previously endangered rhino, shaking the proud hand of a local elder whose once destitute community now has a future or simply witnessing the sun rising once more over lands that have been restored to their natural splendour, our guests cannot fail to be touched by the contribution that they are making to &Beyond's work in Africa's wide open spaces.
Conservation, which is at the foundation of the &Beyond business, is the preservation and careful management of the environment.
The &Beyond guest experience revolves around the ancient drama of the great wildlife spectacles of the world - a natural theatre.
The &Beyond model of community participation has become the standard for ecotourism within the industry.
