Just as legendary missionary-explorer Dr David Livingstone was swept up by sheer wonderment, nothing can quite prepare you for the awe-inspiring spectacle that is the majestic Victoria Falls. Aptly named Mosi-oa-Tunya “the Smoke which Thunders”, the roaring, mist-filled chasm of the world’s largest sheet of falling water is an absolute must-see on an African safari. Just 40 kilometres (24 miles) above the Falls, the mighty Zambezi River that feeds this UNESCO World Heritage Site glides serenely past the wildlife haven of Matetsi Private Game Reserve. Splashes of blue remind guests of the rushing waters of the Zambezi River. Here, guests have the opportunity to take advantage of an extensive Safari Shop, fitness centre, massage sala and conference facility. A 23 meter long, rim-flow swimming pool stretches along the riverbank, while an exclusive wine cellar boasts eye-level views of the Zambezi River.
&Beyond Matetsi River Lodge boasts two intimate camps of just nine river-facing suites each, including two family suites. Each camp features its own guest area with a variety of dining spaces, an interactive kitchen, a convivial bar and an al fresco area that encircles a blazing fire bowl. Each of the nine spacious suites, at the two intimate camps, are encased in local and repurposed materials that reference the ancient fishing and basket-weaving traditions of the region. The clean lines of the interiors are softened by authentic craft pieces and curated natural objects. A lovely ensuite bathroom boasts indoor and outdoor showers as well as a deep circular bath, which looks out over the Zambezi. A private veranda offers a refreshing pool and a comfortable sitting area that overlooks the river.

Explore the banks of the Zambezi River in search of wildlife Day 5
With its beautiful setting and ample wildlife, &Beyond Matetsi Private Game Reserve offers the most exclusive game viewing experience in Victoria Falls. Twice a day, you will enjoy the opportunity to set off in search of wildlife in an open-air safari vehicle, accompanied by a ranger and tracker. Traverse the magnificent, varied landscapes and marvel at vast herds of elephant and buffalo, as well as the elegant and majestic sable antelope and a variety of predators.
Early morning game drives begin as the sun peeps over the horizon and the dark of the night fades slowly into grey. Inhale the fragrance of the morning dew as you set off into the cool dawn, alert for signs as the inhabitants of the bush begin to stir. Watch as a herd of buffalo begins to stirs, hundreds of animals heading to the nearest waterhole amidst a chorus of grunts, hooves scuffing the dust. As the sun rises higher in the sky, the sheen of a glossy mahogany hide betrays the presence of the rare sable antelope, with its elegant, sweeping horns.
Starting in the late afternoon, the second game drive of the day may head down to the banks of the Zambezi, catching a herd of elephant as they head down to the waters to bathe the dust of the day off their flanks. Thrill to the excitement of the chase as you follow hot on the trail of a pack of wild dogs in pursuit of their prey or sit quietly and watch a lion pride stir and stretch as they prepare for the night’s hunt. Stop for sundowners as the last rays of the sun colour the sky in shades of orange and purple. Keep an ear open for the distant yipping of hyenas, trying to gauge direction and distance as you prepare to follow by the glow of the tracker’s spotlight.
Feel the spray of the Smoke That Thunders Day 6
Walk in the footsteps of explorers of old as you make the pilgrimage to wonder at the beauty and power of Victoria Falls, one of the world’s greatest natural wonders. Set off accompanied by your &Beyond guide and make the drive into the charming and historical town of Victoria Falls. As you disembark, the thunder and spray of the falls will mark the way as you set off to explore this magnificent World Heritage Site.
Spanning nearly two kilometres (over a mile) and dropping 103 metres (338 feet) at its highest point, Victoria Falls is the largest curtain of falling water in the world. The immense volume of water that drops over the craggy rocks (500 million litres, or 132 million gallons, per minute at full flow) throws up a cloud of spray that can be seen miles away. So awesome is the noise and mist that the original local name given to the waterfall was Mosi-oa-Tunya or “the smoke that thunders”. Discovered by British explorer and missionary David Livingstone in 1855, the falls were renamed in honour of his queen.
Led by your guide, immerse yourself in the lush rainforest that has sprung up around the falls as you make your way along the scenic paths. Wonder at the graceful Victoria Falls Bridge, constructed in 1905 and hear about the history of the area. Gaze into the depths of the craggy Batoka Gorge and weave your way along the edge of the falls, slowly zigzagging towards their zenith. Enveloped in rainbows created in the cool spray, marvel at the spectacle as the emerald waters of the broad Zambezi tumble and roar into an endless chasm. Pause for a moment at the statue of David Livingstone and try to image his wonder and exultation at first glimpsing this unforgettable natural spectacle.
Wind down from your adventure on the shaded terrace of the gracious and iconic Victoria Falls Hotel, which dates back to 1904, where you will indulge in the ceremony of high tea surrounded by the elegant reminders of a bygone colonial era.

Known as “the river that never finds the sea”, its crystal clear channels spread over the thirstlands of the Kalahari with their papyrus-fringed banks and fertile floating islands. Adapted for a life in and out of water, the elegant red lechwe and shy sitatunga are found in this watery wilderness. Lion, cheetah, leopard and African wild dog share the floodplains with large herds of elephant and buffalo. Hippo inhabit the deeper channels and lagoons, while honey badgers can be seen in broad daylight. Tall termite mounds are homes for families of dwarf and banded mongoose. Experience the delicate details of the glistening waterways on a mokoro (dugout canoe) ride, where iridescent dragonflies, frogs of every colour and jewel-like kingfishers live in the papyrus-lined banks

Explore a world of wildlife Day 8
Game drives in the Okavango Delta are remote and secluded, with very few safari vehicles sharing the private concession. &Beyond’s professionally trained guides tailor drives to your preferences, promising up-close views of unique wildlife and flourishing vegetation. In this untamed landscape, sensitive off-road driving practices allow you to get up close the area’s exceptional wildlife. Each game drive is an adventure, balancing along narrow wooden bridges and splashing through shallow crossings in a rugged open safari vehicle.
Set out in search of the Delta rich wildlife, including its semi-aquatic antelopes, the elegant red lechwe and shy sitatunga antelope. Search from the area’s predators, from lion prides to cheetah, leopard and African wild dog. Explore the open woodlands in search of roan and sable antelope or keep an eye out for graceful giraffes and frisky zebras on the floodplains. On the edges of the Delta, where land blurs with water, marvel at breeding herds of that elephant splash gently through shallow channels.
Afternoon drives continue after night, allowing for nocturnal wildlife encounters. Watch out for the rarely spotted serval and pangolin or watch the moon reflect off the backs of a family of hippo coming out of the water to graze, turning them into slabs of shining silver.
