Today, you will be collected from your hotel for an unforgettable train journey to Agra.

Known globally as the home of the ultimate testament to love, the inimitable Taj Mahal, the story of Agra begins much earlier than the construction of this extraordinary monument. Capital of the Mughal Empire, during the 16th and 17th centuries, Agra is home to some of the finest architectural achievements of this remarkable dynasty. As such, it forms the third apex of the Golden Triangle, a popular itinerary that takes in some of India’s famed architectural highlights. Agra is situated along the banks of the Yamuna River and most of its historical monuments overlook this waterway. It is home to three World Heritage Sites; The Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and the nearby Fatehpur Sikr.

As your train trundles into Agra, your &Beyond representative will be ready and waiting to drive you to the Oberoi Amarvilas, where you will spend the next two nights.

Inspired by Moorish and Mughal architecture, the Oberoi Amarvilas is the perfect counterpoint to the majestic Taj Mahal, which can be seen from all its rooms. The hotel delights guests with its terraced lawns, fountains, reflection pools and pavilions. A fine selection of international cuisine, as well as authentic dishes highlighting the flavours of India, is served at a choice of two restaurants. Guests can indulge in the royal treatment at the rejuvenating spa and, during the heat of the day, a cobalt blue swimming pool set in a terraced garden offers the ideal refreshment.

Spend the rest of the day unwinding or exploring your beautiful retreat, before freshening up for your first memorable tour – a romantic sunset exploration of the iconic Taj Mahal. Said to be one of the most elegant and a harmonious building in the world, Taj Mahal is the manifestation of the wealth and luxury of Mughal art as seen in its architecture, garden design, painting, and calligraphy.

Scenic drive to Jaipur Day 7

View details

Today, after your morning jungle drive, you will be collected for your scenic drive to Jaipur.

The gateway to Rajasthan, and part of India’s famed Golden Triangle, Jaipur (the Pink City), is a fascinating mix of ancient forts, royal palaces and vibrant bazaars mixed with modern, shopping malls and busy commercial centres. At the heart of Jaipur is the historical 18th century old city, surrounded by huge fortification walls and entered through eight towering gates. Timeless bazaars are crammed with colourful textiles, beautiful pottery and the region’s famed jewellery. The focal point of the city is the Palace of Winds, a five storey Baroque-like structure built to allow the veiled ladies of the harem the opportunity to observe the street scenes below, while remaining unnoticed.

Upon arrival in Jaipur, you will check-in at the Oberoi Rajvilas.

Located just 15 minutes away from the city centre of Jaipur, the award-winning Oberoi Rajvilas is the perfect base from which to explore one of India’s most exotic and vibrant cities. This idyllic retreat evokes princely Rajasthan with luxury villas and royal tents situated within a fort setting and surrounded by 32 acres of lush gardens, flowering trees and cascading fountains. A 280-year-old Shiva temple and a Rajasthani haveli (mansion) on the premises of the hotel have been carefully restored. Extensively renovated, the haveli now serves as the indulgent Oberoi Spa that offers soothing, holistic Ayurvedic and Western therapies.

After settling in, you will have the opportunity to enjoy an evening excursion to Dera Amer, for an unforgettable elephant experience. Here, you get up-close to giant pachyderms, partake in their feed time, help bathe the elephants with the help of their mahout, and then get creative by painting your charge with natural paints. Afterwards, enjoy a fun-filled elephant ride around a forest.

Following you guided ride, tuck into a mouth-watering homemade dinner at the camp.

Dera Amer, situated behind the hills of the famous Amer Fort, is the ideal location for outdoor recreational and adventure activities – in very close proximity to the city of Jaipur. The camp is located at the foothills of the Aravali Range and surrounded by the wilderness of a reserved forest. You will find no urban civilization in the vicinity, just a few hamlets with villagers mostly occupied by farming their fields bordering a pretty lake.

Spend three nights at the Oberoi Rajvilas. Accommodation is in a Premier Room. Your stay is on a Bed & Breakfast basis.

Embark on a tour of the city Palace Day 8

View details

Today, after a wholesome breakfast, you will be taken on a tour of the City Palace. The whole complex is wonderfully laid out; with large courtyards, balconies, cupolas, arched entrances and gardens, which are prime examples of Rajput architecture. The museum here displays the rich heritage of the Jaipur family, in miniature paintings, textiles, garments, books and manuscripts, carpets, palanquins and weapons dating back to the 15th century. During your tour you will be given exclusive access to explore the palace’s private chambers, which are not accessible by the general public.
After your interpretive adventure, you will have the opportunity of embarking on a walking tour of the market in the old city. Visit the Maniharon ka rasta (bangle makers lane), then walk to the Thada market (wholesale area), followed by a tour of the wedding market. Afterwards, cross through the flower market and pass by a few temples on the way, along with many small stalls.

Wander the ancient grounds and the history-rich walls of Amer Fort and the Anokhi Musuem Day 9

View details

The historical fort of Amer is ideally placed on a high hill overlooking the Maota Lake with its saffron garden island, 11 kilometres from the pink city of Jaipur and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built in 1593, but fully completed in the 18th century, the Fort is quartered, each boasting a private courtyard. True to the times, the Fort features Indo-Islamic design, illustrating ruddy sandstone and pearlescent marble, with massive bulwarks and successions of ingresses along charming cobbled pathways. An architectural masterwork, the Fort channels the wind to breeze over a water cascade within the palace, brilliantly incorporating an artificial cooling system. The palace and Fort make up a single compound, separated by a concealed passageway. This channel was meant as an escape route in times of war that would allow the royal family and others in the Amer Fort to seek refuge in the formidable Jaigarh Fort located in the same Mountain Range area.

The Anokhi museum of Hand Printing is located in a wonderfully restored haveli within walking distance of the Amer Fort, and exhibits an active acquisition program with a varietal of block printed textiles, alongside animated images, time honoured photographs, antiquated wood and brass tools, and related craft-like objects that provide a window into the lives of an ancient people. The art of block textile printing can be traced back centuries, easily considered to be the slowest and oldest form of textile printing, and was practiced across the East by imprinting various patterns onto textiles, by means of chiselled wooden blocks. Today, India is one of the largest producers and exporters of block printed fabrics in the world. The museum also houses contemporary textiles works, featuring pioneering designs fashioned by talented artisans. The structure was brilliantly restored employing traditional resources, age-old design approaches, and expert local craftsmen, earning a much deserved UNESCO award for ‘Cultural Heritage Conservation.’
