Meet the Private Guides

Offering the ultimate tailor-made safari, an &Beyond Private Guide will be your dedicated chaperone throughout your &Beyond Private Jet Expedition. Warm and engaging, and brimming with a wealth of knowledge, they will be able to offer invaluable insight about the main attractions of each of the destinations you explore as well as provide fascinating insight about the continent’s unique wildlife and its vibrant people.

Daryl Dell

Growing up on a horse, cattle and sheep farm in the Great Karoo, Daryl was always fated to become a naturalist. From a young age, he would spend entire days walking in the bush, fascinated by animal tracks, skulls, feathers and dung. After high school, Daryl embarked on a BComm, but when he found himself concentrating more on his bird book than accounting, he realised it was time to get back to the bush. He joined &Beyond Phinda Private Game Reserve in 2002. As part of the mentorship programme, he had advised and trained rangers, while also earning his Grade 2 Walking qualification, allowing him to track dangerous game, including buffalo, black and white rhino and elephant on foot. He quickly climbed the ranks from Assistant Head Ranger to Head Ranger, became a Grade 2 Walking Assessor, was later promoted to Specialist Guide and is now a fully-qualified Private Guide.

Grant Telfer

For Grant, one very distinct early childhood memory stands out. As a young boy on a family canoeing expedition, he sat quietly one winter morning on a sandbank overlooking the Zambezi Valley. As the sun rose, he watched hippo returning to the Zambezi River from their nightly forage. He remembers being completely awestruck and knew from then on that he would pursue an adventurous life in the bush. This endless quest for adventure has taken Grant to the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro, the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda in search of mountain gorillas, and of course, to the rare sand forest of &Beyond Phinda Private Game Reserve where he was a guide and mentor for six years. He then took on the role of Regional Ranger Trainer for East Africa and is now based in the Serengeti/Mara, heading up &Beyond’s Mwewe Ranger Training School. Grant has extensive experience guiding guests on private safaris and believes the best way to experience the bush is on foot. He is a qualified trails guide and Grade 2 walker.

Chris Renshaw

Chris’s love for anything wild and adventurous came from a deep-rooted attachment to the African continent. It all started from a mother who was brought up in Kenya, and a father who hitchhiked from London to Johannesburg. With that in mind, the consequent adventures and forays into the African bushveld made Chris fall in love with everything wild, natural and free. This inevitably led to studying Zoology. After obtaining his Masters and all the relevant guiding qualifications, his lifelong dream of becoming a wildlife guide was realised. Having seen and experienced most of what luxury lodges can offer in Africa, Chris has had the ideal schooling in what luxury safari travel is all about. With the drive of fun and adventure, mixed with respect and knowledge of the African bush, added with a dash of charisma, he will take you on an African Safari that you will never forget. Chris was recently awarded the Africa Geographic Photographer of the Year 2015 and has appeared on the Discovery Channel on a number wildlife documentaries.
