Over 20 years ago, missionaries helped establish a dispensary in the Mayoka community, situated just outside of Lake Manyara National Park. A few years ago, the clinic was handed over to the community, and a nurse by the name of Anna ran the clinic entirely on her own. Every day, Anna walked 4 km from her home to the dispensary to tend to patients. Africa Foundation helped Anna mobilise the community to repair and repaint the building, and this work was recognised by the District Medical Officer who then appointed a full-time doctor to the clinic. Anna and Doctor Bijima now provide medical care to 5 000 community members.
Since then, the &Beyond Lake Manyara Staff, with our partner the Africa Foundation have raised funds to build new nurses accommodation.
