Mnemba Island Turtle Time!
It’s Turtle Time!
Although green turtles can, and do, lay eggs on the beaches of &Beyond Mnemba Island at any given time of year, the laying season typically peaks in February and March. The turtles lay their eggs under the moonlight, and it is extremely unusual to find a turtle still on the beach at sunrise. This year, however, a turtle was spotted in the morning outside of one of the beach bandas. What a treat for guests to witness and photograph the entire process in daylight! This particular turtle measured 105 cm in length and 95 cm in width and has now been tagged for research purposes. According to Mnemba’s records, we are delighted to report that the number of nests laid during the peak season (01 February to 15 March) has steadily increased from 6 nests in 2006 to 12 nests in 2011.
