Forest Lodge reinvented at &Beyond Phinda

Forest Lodge at &Beyond Phinda Private Game Reserve in KwaZulu-Natal has undergone a massive rebuild of its guest areas and refurbishment of its 16 glass suites, boasting a fresh new look.

Set deep in a rare dry sand forest, the eco-sensitive Forest Lodge has been a success since it opened almost 16 years ago, when not one tree was felled during construction. Using only local artisans and labour to complete the new rebuild, the metamorphosis of the Lodge took place at a slow pace to protect the natural surroundings.

The layout of the 16 glass suites was altered to ensure sheer privacy and intimacy, while celebrating the remarkable forest surrounds. While still retaining the Lodge’s signature sophisticated Zulu Zen style, the overall look was updated; the woodwork replaced; new floors and windows installed; and the suites repainted.

Each brand new bathroom was retiled, and given a spacious new bathtub, twin hand basins and new fittings. The stone and sand palate has been artistically accented with a soft Zulu orange, and dark, handsome furniture used throughout.

Over 100m² (1 076 square feet) was added to the deck in the guest area, splitting it into two levels. Guest area furnishings are still minimalist chic but have been updated with additional layers and detail. The theatre of food spills into the guest areas in an open breakfast zone where chefs can be seen cooking up a storm in the interactive kitchen. Guests are now able to see the wonderful selection of local produce used to create their delicious meals.

The boma (outdoor reeded enclosure used for dining under the stars) was completely rebuilt using innovative gabions filled with gum poles, adding depth and texture. The space has been reconfigured and an elevated platform added for nighttime choir performances.

With its fresh new look and unique location in a rare dry sand forest, Forest Lodge is a wonderful base from which to explore the game-rich reserve during the day, and then enjoy being wrapped in luxury and romance at night.
