"“Arriving via a tiny bush plane at Sossusvlei Desert Lodge was both daring and poetic. Literally in the middle of nowhere, it appeared like an oasis, and nothing about it – from the ultraprivate villas to the star-filled sky to the awesome silence – ever truly felt real”"

Drama and romance in the Serengeti with &Beyond Under Canvas

The luxurious tented camps of &Beyond Serengeti Under Canvas move around the Serengeti National Park year round, bringing guests within reach of the Great Migration, as well as offering exceptional sightings of the resident game in the remote corners of the park.

Using only private campsites, these exclusive semi-nomadic camps offer the epitome of classic African style and romance in tented travel. There are two camps with just eight spacious tents, each with double bed, ensuite bathroom, separate flush w.c and al fresco bucket shower. Crisp linens, sparkling crystal and polished brass add an elegant finesse to the simplicity of camping.

Guests enjoy hearty bush meals served next to a blazing campfire under a starlit African sky; relax in luxurious roomy tents featuring all the comforts one could wish for; experience exhilarating game drives led by &Beyond -trained guides; and get closer to the soul of Africa by drifting off to sleep to the night sounds of the wilderness.

Carefully planned according to the projected movements of the Great Migration, the camps aim to bring guests within comfortable driving distance of the herds during daily safaris (early/mid morning, and then again in the afternoon/early evening - or often for the full day). However, the wildebeest masses move with the rains, which occur at a different time each year, so it is not always possible to predict exactly where they will be. &Beyond ’s expert guides will always try to place guests in the midst of the Migration but should they not appear when expected, their intimate knowledge of the ample resident game will ensure a rich game viewing experience.

Having secured the best of the Serengeti’s private wilderness campsites, all pre-booked for the exclusive use of &Beyond ’s guests,
Serengeti Under Canvas offers the best of both worlds - the flexibility to be near the best resident game or the excitement of the Migration, with the added luxury and romance of elegant private tents available on a nightly basis.

Typical Routing of the Migration:

  • Jan/Feb/March: short-grass plains of Southern Serengeti

  • April/May: Central Serengeti

  • June: Western corridor of the Serengeti; crossing of the Grumeti River

  • July: Northern Serengeti; some start moving north for the Mara River crossing

  • Aug/Sep/Oct: Masai Mara in Kenya

  • Nov/Dec: Southward journey back to the Serengeti
