Who Let the Dogs Out?

The wild dogs are back! After a long absence, we are delighted to see that a pack of Indian wild dogs (dholes) has returned to Kanha National Park. Quite close to &Beyond Banjaar Tola Kanha Tented Camp in the Mukki zone, naturalist Durgesh spotted the pack of four dogs headed through a meadow and into the Sal forest in search of prey. Distress calls from a sambar indicated something might be happening, when three of the dogs suddenly joined the road ahead. Durgesh could hear sounds of a kill being made, yet the three dogs were moving out, and then a fourth dog also materialised. When a tiger emerged from the forest, it finally became evident what had happened. The dogs had made a spotted deer kill, but had been chased away by the tiger who managed to steal their meal. The pack of wild dogs scampered into the grassland, with the tiger chasing them for quite a distance. How exciting to watch these dogs jumping out of the grass one by one, to have a clear look at the cat before they made their escape. It’s a fight for survival in the Indian jungle!
