Itinerary in Detail

13 September

Land in Johannesburg at 16h10. The next & only flight out to Windhoek is at 18h25- which is fine if there are no delays but a bit risky. What do you think?

I suggest overnight in The Airport Intercontinental Southern Sun for a night to recover from jetlag – well a bit anyway!

14 September

Fly to Windhoek on the 09h45 flight landing in Windhoek in time for lunch at 11h45. Collect your Hired Car 4×4- is highly recommended.

Kick-start your adventure with an approximately 45 minute drive to the beautiful Olive Grove Guest House.

Windhoek, Namibia’s capital is a bustling metropolis that is unexpectedly neat and orderly – though this is perhaps less surprising when one considers it was a German territory for many years. This is the main port of call for most tourists and all travellers pass through the city at least once. Windhoek lies in a pretty valley with buildings very much in the German architectural style. The German presence can be strongly felt in the food, restaurants – and of course the beer. The Namibian beer is said to be the best in Africa, and is brewed in Windhoek.

Spend one night at Olive Grove Guest House

15 & 16 September

Take about a 3 hour drive to Erongo Wilderness Lodge – where fabulous walks are available for your stay here.

The Erongo region, which encompasses the town of Omaruru, is characterized by colourful landscapes, ancient rock art, and strange geological phenomena. Situated only 10 kilometres from Omaruru amongst massive granite outcrops is Erongo Wilderness Lodge. Accommodation at this unusual lodge consists of ten tents, which are set on stilts under thatch. Each tent has a double or three-quarter bed, en-suite facilities, toilet, and a balcony that offers a panoramic view. The tents are connected by raised walkways and natural stone, which are lit up at night by small brass lamps creating a feeling of true Africa. The restaurant and bar have been built on another rocky outcrop with a 360-degree view of huge rocks and tree filled valleys. The deck overlooking the swimming pool, which has been built between rocks, offers a view towards the Erongo Mountains, which are renowned for the rock art found at sites such as Paula’s Cave. Guests may join guided walks where a range of endemic trees and birds can be seen, or relax at one of the stone hides near the waterhole where mountain zebra, kudu, Oryx, springbok, klipspringer and Damara dik dik come down to drink.

18, 19 & 20 September

Tuck into a wholesome breakfast and head off on a 5 Hour self drive adventure to the beautiful Onguma Tented Camp.

Stop over on the way at !Uris for lunch and their fascinating Mine tour.

Etosha is one of Africa’s great wildlife parks and Namibia’s prime wildlife conservation area. Spanning a vast 22 300km², it consists mostly of grassy plains around a huge saltpan, which becomes a beautiful lake after heavy rains and attracts large flocks of pink candy-flossed-coloured flamingos. Etosha hosts a vast array of animals, including the Big Five as well as giraffes and rare and unusual species like the black-faced impala, Hartmann’s Mountain zebra or the smallest antelope in the world, the Damara dikdik.

Spend three nights at Onguma Tented Camp in a twin bedded tent.  Your stay is on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis including two guided nature walks.

Optional adventures include morning and afternoon game drives into Etosha National Park.

21 & 22 September

After a delectable breakfast hop back into your car for the approximately 5-hour journey to Mowani Mountain Camp.

Situated on the eastern side of the Skeleton Coast National Park and southwest of Etosha National Park, is the breathtaking mountainous region of Damaraland. Here, an assortment of desert-adapted wildlife such as elephant, rhino, zebra and lion seek-out an existence in this near-barren landscape. A not-to-be-missed attraction is the picturesque Brandberg, Namibia’s highest mountain, which is home to thousands of ancient rock paintings – most notably, The White Lady. While nearby, the rocky outcrops of Twyfelfontein feature exceptional Bushmen engravings, which are considered to be some of the best preserved etchings on the continent. Visitors to Damaraland can view one of its more unusual habitats – the Petrified Forest, which dates back millions of years and offers a haunting landscape of gigantic fossilised trees, some up to 30 metres (100ft) in length.

Spend two nights at Mowani Mountain Camp in a twin bedded luxury East Africa-style view safari tent.  Your stay is on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis including two guided nature walks.

Optional adventures and activities at Mowani include guided nature drives in search of the elusive desert elephant. An excursion to explore the historical site of Twyfelfontein – a rare example of Bushmen engravings and paintings and probably the finest example of rock engravings in Southern Africa is available as well as a tour of a Mara Village- fascinating authentic experience that supports the local people that were previously unemployed. .
