The magic of Botswana
The magic of Botswana

A magical setting where land blurs with water, the first destination is a private campsite in the Okavango Delta, where you can explore the winding waterways by mokoro. The next stop is Moremi Game Reserve, where the long necks of a family of giraffe materialise slowly out of the skyline and graceful sitatunga hide in the reeds. The landscape changes in Savute, with its intermittently flowing channel. In the famed Chobe National Park elephant wander dreamily into camp and hippo slumber as you float down the river on a sunset cruise. Riverside thickets are visited by vast herds of buffalo and large families of elephant.

Banks of the mighty Zambezi

Wildlife

Wildlife

The Okavango Delta is home to a large number of species, including some that are specially adapted to the semi-aquatic lifestyle, such as the elegant red lechwe and shy sitatunga antelope. Families of hippo frolic in the channels and lagoons, while roan and sable antelope are occasionally spotted in the open woodlands. Elegant giraffe and herds of zebra can be encountered on the floodplains. Lion prefer the drier areas, while leopard can be found in dense riverine forest. The sparkling channels teem with a variety of fish, while hundreds of bird species, frogs and insects inhabit the reeded banks.

The floodplains of Moremi shelter vast families of elephant and huge herds of buffalo, as well as large numbers of zebra, waterbuck, kudu, red lechwe, tsessebe and impala. The elusive sable and roan antelope may be spotted in the mopane scrub. The large predators encountered may include lion, spotted hyena, leopard and cheetah. The reserve is most famous for its African wild dog, boasting high numbers of these animals. Moremi is also an excellent area for birdwatchers.

Renowned as one of the top wilderness reserves in the world, Chobe National Park is home to the largest concentration of elephant on the African continent. It is also well known for its large herds of buffalo, as well as the two antelope that cannot be encountered anywhere else in Botswana, the puku and the Chobe bushbuck. Both the puku and the bushbuck have a number of predators to contend with, as lion and hyena are frequently encountered in Chobe and the elusive leopard can be found hiding in the riverside thickets.

A corner of the Chobe National Park, Savute is particularly well known for its high concentration of lion, which vie for dominance with the spotted hyena. The African wild dog also thrives in the area. Like the remainder of Chobe, Savute has large numbers of elephant. The region is also rich in antelope, with common species such as impala and kudu encountered alongside giants such as the eland. Waterbuck may be spotted in areas with thicker vegetation and visitors may catch sight of the aristocratic roan and sable.
