The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency

hot

The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency is a series of novels by British author Alexander McCall Smith that has been turned into a popular television series shot on location in Gaborone, Botswana.

Whilst in the UK last year I discovered the No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency again, thanks to British Telly. This wonderful series lightened up Sunday evenings for both Duncan and I; with all it’s wonderful characters and colourful African scenes. I still laugh when I think of  Happy and the dubious daddy…or when Mma Precious Ramotswe flies around in her little white Datsun.

Guests visiting Gaborone can now take part in the charming Mma Ramotswe’s Botswana day tour, which follows in the footsteps of the main character, Mma Precious Ramotswe, the fictitious first female private investigator in Botswana and founder of the Agency.

The tour starts outside her house on Zebra Drive and continues on to Tlokweng Road Speedy Motors, JLB Matekoni’s house, and the President Hotel where guests can sample her favourite drink, rooibos tea. After a stop at the Phuthadikobo Museum, which supplied the images that now grace the covers of McCall Smith’s novels, and an insightful visit to a traditional home, a hearty African meal will then be enjoyed at a local restaurant. The tour will even stop at the exact spot where McCall Smith is said to have met the woman who inspired Mma Ramotswe’s character. What a great way to experience Botswana’s capital city!
